Last Entry Of The Year

There has not been much creativity in me lately! The days are short and I am sleepy. Tim says I don't go outside enough. Today I spent some time soaking up the sun in my garden and I know he's right. It was great out there. Happily we are packing up and heading out for a couple of weeks; to the beach, then to the mountains. To all you virtual wandering souls, Namaste. Elena_ray158copyright2007

This Image "Krishnamacharya". The iconic granddaddy of Yogis. Lazertran on wood panel and stained with painted Om symbol. I have this hanging up in my sun room where I practice yoga. I always love seeing him there. His eyes are so big and bright! Photo taken from the book by his son and yogi Desikachar "The Heart Of Yoga"

More Untitled thoughts and images...

I can go places in my psyche where I was once forbidden or ignored. I can communicate in a decisive manner, with the once unreachable presence. There is no sense of victory or joy, just ease, naturalness...I am calm. I do not wake up excited. I return to my work with greater clarity and purpose. It is meaningful to become one with what you love, to transcend the gap that once separated you, even if it is only in your dreams.

This Image "Untitled" Elena Ray Copyright 2007. Photography based mixed medium image. I am learning to let the image go in whatever direction it flys. I am not in control of the process, I just have many ways now of maintaining it's movement. This collage/montage of a butterfly has been through so many changes it would be monotonous to list them. It is both organic collage and digital montage. I am not sure if it is finished.

I get charged up on combining words with images. I have as much fun giving my images titles as I do creating the image. Sometimes I research the subject's symbolism before a title comes to me. As this process evolves I am more and more amazed by how energizing symbols are. For me the car is the most obvious example of a cultural symbol in action; the mode in which we journey through life/our vehicle...As my beloved old SUV ages I must consider my next car. The obvious choice for me is a small van, economical and carries a lot of stuff. I haven't considered what I'd like to drive...just what I should have. A hybrid is too small...? Maybe I will just take the bus. Or stay home and become an art hermit. With the internet one might never need to leave...

One of my favorite artists is Duane Michals. He truly rose to the art of combining poetry and photography.

The Old Zen Master's Studio

After titling this image I entertained myself thinking that I was the old Zen master and it IS my studio! I could really be that character. It seems like you could be fearlessly irrelevant.

This Image "The Old Zen Master's Studio". Still life photograph made using my American clay wall as a background. This is the first finished image I've produced using the wall. So far the straight color images are not working; I can't get the colors right. After working for so long outside in the natural light tent, the studio work with lights is mind boggling. This image was desaturated and then printed on an Acrylic and Ink Aid primed watercolor paper substrate.

Womb of Sisyphus

...I continue to roll paragraphs up the hill...

Thomas Trofimuk blew me away a couple of weeks ago when he complimented me on my "careful" writing. And then congratulated me on my courage and said he knew why artist's drink. Thanks a lot Thomas! I'm going to buy your novel "Doubting Yourself To The Bone" right now. Perfect.
